EDNA,  SOUTH TEXAS

Twelve thirty in Edna, South Texas

She´s done with her chicken and fries

She´s reading the newspaper´s headlines

Saying: “Governor Brady denies”

And in a low voice I can hear her saying

“Why didn´t he ask me to stay?”

She looks like she´d once been a beauty

She´s still looking pretty right now

Well people like her´ve done their duty

Though her denims are faded and worn down

And once more I can hear her saying

“Why didn´t he ask me to stay?”

She looks at me over her paper

And speaks in a whispering voice

“I´ll tell you what I am still waitin´ for

From the day that he left me no choice:

I dream and I´m prayin´ that one day

He´s back and he asks me to stay!”

One thirty in Edna, South Texas

The waitress is back with my check

“You see I am lost here in my own past

Still waiting for him to come back”

And wasn´t it her I heard saying:

“Why didn´t he ask me to stay?”
